About the event

1. Purpose

The act enables designated members of a church or place of worship to carry firearms for the protection of the congregation and to resist any unlawful attempt to commit a violent felony upon a member or attendee within the church premises.

2. Eligibility for Immunity:

  •  Participants in the security program must possess a valid firearms permit issued under Section 45-9-101.
  •  They must complete an instructional course in the safe handling and use of firearms as described in Section 97-37-7.
  • The church must maintain a record of the designated security program members, which must be made available to law enforcement upon request during investigations.

3. Definition of Church or Place of Worship:

  •  For the purposes of this act, a “church” or “place of worship” refers to a bona fide duly constituted religious society, ecclesiastical body, or any congregation thereof.

4. Immunity from Civil Liability:

  •  Members of the security program are immune from civil liability for actions taken during the reasonable exercise of their official duties as part of the security program.

This law aims to enhance security within places of worship while ensuring responsible firearm handling and training. It reflects the state’s commitment to protecting its citizens and promoting safety in religious settings.
