About the event
1. Purpose:
The act enables designated members of a church or place of worship to carry firearms for the protection of the congregation and to resist any unlawful attempt to commit a violent felony upon a member or attendee within the church premises.
2. Eligibility for Immunity:
- Participants in the security program must possess a valid firearms permit issued under Section 45-9-101.
- They must complete an instructional course in the safe handling and use of firearms as described in Section 97-37-7.
- The church must maintain a record of the designated security program members, which must be made available to law enforcement upon request during investigations.
3. Definition of Church or Place of Worship:
- For the purposes of this act, a “church” or “place of worship” refers to a bona fide duly constituted religious society, ecclesiastical body, or any congregation thereof.
4. Immunity from Civil Liability:
- Members of the security program are immune from civil liability for actions taken during the reasonable exercise of their official duties as part of the security program.
